Try a bolt gun before you buy one.

Ranges within about two hours of Austin that rent bolt-action rifles, so you can put rounds through one before you spend the money.

The short version

Don't go alone the first time

Most ranges won't hand a rental to someone who walks in by themselves. Bring a friend or your own gun and you're covered everywhere.

Not worth the trip for a bolt gun

Against what you asked for

Generally a bolt action, maybe a 8–10 round mag? And maybe some basic optic on there.

Capacity is the real filter

Most hunting bolts hold 4 or 5. For 10, look for one that takes AI-style (AICS-pattern) detachable mags, where 10-rounders are easy to find. The Bergara HMR at Shady Oaks takes those, and the Steyr Scout at Lone Star has a 10-round mag option. The Ruger American Predator in .308 should too. Ask the desk.

Ask which ones are scoped

None of the rental lists say which rifles have glass on them. A bolt gun on iron sights won't tell you much past 50 yards, so ask before you pay for the rental.
